Container Shipping - Road Haulage for Sea & Rail Containers

A container doesn't move itself once it's off the ship. Cargo Logistic Solutions handles the road leg of container shipping - collecting containers from ports and rail terminals and delivering them to your warehouse, or the reverse, using our own container-carrying fleet. The ocean or rail leg is arranged through our partners; the ground handling, customs, and final delivery are ours.

What Container Shipping With CargoLS Covers

We don't operate container vessels. What we provide is the road haulage that connects a container to its actual destination: collection from the port or inland terminal, transport on our own container chassis, and delivery to your site - or the reverse for export loads heading to the port. This is the leg most shipping lines don't handle well, because it needs local knowledge of terminal slots, road permits, and customs timing at the destination end.

For businesses running regular import or export volumes, this means one contact managing the container from terminal gate to warehouse door, instead of coordinating a shipping line, a separate haulier, and a customs broker yourself.

FCL vs LCL - Which Applies to Container Shipping

  • FCL (Full Container Load). One container dedicated entirely to your cargo - standard 20ft, 40ft, or 40ft High Cube units. Fastest option once the container clears the terminal, since there's no consolidation involved.
  • LCL (Less than Container Load). Your cargo shares a container with other shipments, consolidated and de-consolidated at a container freight station. Cheaper for smaller volumes, but adds time for grouping and ungrouping cargo.

We handle the road leg for both - collecting a full container as a single unit, or picking up de-consolidated cargo from a CFS for onward delivery.

How the Container Haulage Chain Works

  1. Terminal booking. We confirm the container release date and book a collection slot at the port or rail terminal - timing here avoids unnecessary demurrage charges.
  2. Road collection. Our container-carrying vehicles pick up the loaded container directly from the terminal.
  3. Customs and documentation. Import clearance, or export declarations and T1/EX transit paperwork for outbound containers, handled before or during transit.
  4. Delivery and empty return. The container is delivered to your address, unloaded, and the empty unit is returned to a depot within the free time window to avoid detention fees.

Container Types and Capacity

Container type

Internal capacity

Typical use

20ft standard

~33 m³

Dense, heavy cargo (machinery parts, palletised goods)

40ft standard

~67 m³

Standard volume cargo, general retail goods

40ft High Cube

~76 m³

Bulkier, lighter cargo (furniture, e-commerce stock)

Our container-transport vehicles are built to handle these standard sizes on European roads, within the axle-weight and permit limits that apply to container haulage.

What Affects Container Shipping Cost

  • Container size and type - 20ft vs 40ft vs 40ft HC changes both the road transport rate and any port handling charges.
  • Distance from terminal to final destination - the road leg is priced by kilometre, same as any haulage job.
  • Demurrage and detention risk - delays in collecting or returning the container outside the free time window add charges from the terminal or shipping line.
  • FCL vs LCL - LCL adds consolidation/de-consolidation costs at the container freight station.
  • Customs complexity - the type of goods and required certification affect clearance time and cost.
  • Empty return logistics - distance and availability of a depot for returning the empty container after delivery.

FAQ
  • Does Cargo Logistic Solutions operate container ships?

No. We handle the road transport of containers to and from ports and rail terminals, using our own container-carrying fleet, while the sea or rail leg is arranged through partners.

  • What's the difference between FCL and LCL?

FCL means one container is dedicated entirely to your cargo. LCL means your cargo shares a container with other shipments, consolidated at a container freight station, cheaper for smaller volumes but slower.

  • What happens if I keep the container too long?

Ports and shipping lines charge demurrage (for keeping a container at the terminal) or detention (for keeping it outside the terminal) once the free time window expires. We plan collection and return to avoid these charges.

  • Can you deliver a container directly to my warehouse?

Yes. We collect from the port or terminal and deliver the container to your address, then return the empty unit to a depot within the free time period.

  • Which container size should I choose?

It depends on cargo weight and volume, a 20ft suits dense, heavy cargo, while a 40ft or 40ft High Cube suits bulkier, lighter loads. We can advise based on your specific shipment.
