How long does road freight to Bulgaria take?

Do I need customs paperwork for Bulgaria?

Not for goods in free circulation from another EU country - Bulgaria is an EU member and, since January 2025, part of Schengen for land borders, so intra-EU road freight has no customs formalities. Customs applies only where the movement crosses the EU's external border with Turkey or Serbia, which we handle with T1 and clearance lodged in advance.

How is the toll charged for trucks in Bulgaria?

HGVs over 3.5 t pay the distance-based BG Toll (Tol Pass) on actual kilometres driven across the motorway and first-class network, via a GNSS on-board unit, the same per-km model as Germany or Poland, not a time-based vignette (which applies only to light vehicles). Rates rose in January 2026. We manage the compliance and include the toll in the A→B rate.

Can you ship onward from Bulgaria to Turkey?

Yes. Bulgaria is the EU gateway to Turkey via Kapitan Andreevo, one of Europe's busiest crossings, carrying up to about 1,500 trucks a day. We prepare T1 transit and customs before arrival to reduce waiting, and run the wider Turkish corridor as a freight-forwarding service. Is groupage worth it for Bulgaria?

Bulgaria splits its road charging by weight: light vehicles up to 3.5 t use a time-based e-vignette, but HGVs over 3.5 t pay the distance-based BG Toll (Tol Pass) - charged on actual kilometres driven across the motorway and first-class network, via a GNSS on-board unit or route pass. So for a truck, Bulgaria works like Germany's or Poland's per-km systems, not like a vignette country. Tol Pass rates for HGVs rose in January 2026, and prices now display in both BGN and euro as the country prepares for eurozone entry. Getting the vehicle category and route right avoids penalties at the DSRC enforcement gantries. We handle the toll compliance and quote the actual route's cost into the A→B price.

The external EU border, where Bulgaria is unique

Bulgaria's southern and western frontiers are the external border of the EU with Turkey and Serbia. The Kapitan Andreevo-Kapıkule crossing with Turkey is one of Europe's busiest land border points on the E80 corridor, and queues can run for hours at peak. For traffic moving beyond the EU, to or from Turkey especially, this is where customs re-enters: our broker prepares T1 transit and export/import clearance before the truck reaches the border, and for the wider Turkish and Middle-East corridor we run it as Turkey freight forwarding. Within the EU, no such formalities apply.
