Road Freight to Denmark: FTL & LTL, Gateway to Scandinavia

Denmark is the bridge between continental Europe and the Nordics, literally. Cargo bound for Sweden and beyond crosses it via the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen to Malmö, and everything from Germany funnels over the Storebælt and toward the coming Fehmarnbelt link. That makes Denmark both a destination in its own right, a wealthy market strong in pharmaceuticals, food and wind energy, and the doorway to Sweden, Norway and Finland. Cargo Logistic Solutions runs road freight to and through Denmark on its contracted fleet, CMR-insured, with financial liability set in the contract and pricing on the A→B leg only.

Denmark is in the EU and Schengen but not the eurozone. It keeps the Danish krone (DKK) - so intra-EU freight moves without customs formalities, while pricing and any local charges are in DKK. Tell us the two points and the volume, and a logistician confirms FTL or LTL, a transit window and a rate the same day.

Groupage adds 2–4 days for consolidation. The overland approach from northern Germany via Jutland is straightforward; reaching Zealand and Copenhagen crosses the tolled Storebælt (Great Belt) link.

The bridges and the Scandinavian gateway

Denmark's geography is fixed-link geography, and each crossing is a planning and cost factor:

  • Storebælt (Great Belt) - the tolled bridge-tunnel connecting Jutland/Funen to Zealand; HGVs pay a substantial toll.
  • Øresund, the tolled bridge from Copenhagen to Malmö, the road gateway into Sweden and the wider Nordics.
  • Fehmarnbelt, the immersed tunnel under construction between Denmark and northern Germany, set to shorten the Hamburg-Copenhagen run significantly when it opens; we plan around the current ferry/bridge routing until then.

We quote the bridge tolls into the A→B price and route Nordic-bound cargo over Øresund as a natural extension of the Danish lane.

KmToll, the national distance-based road charge. Since 1 January 2025, Denmark also levies a kilometre-based road tax on HGVs over 12 t, replacing the old Eurovignette, separate from and in addition to the bridge tolls. It applies to the country's main road network, around 10,900 km, with full nationwide coverage planned for 2028, not just the fixed links. We factor it into the A→B rate alongside the bridge crossings.

What Denmark imports and exports

Denmark is high-value and specialised: it exports pharmaceuticals (a global Danish strength), food products (dairy, pork, seafood), machinery and, notably, wind-turbine components, an industry where Denmark leads and which generates significant oversized cargo. It imports machinery, vehicles, consumer goods and raw materials. That shapes our typical loads: GDP pharmaceuticals and temperature-controlled food outbound, palletised industrial and retail goods inbound, and abnormal-load wind components on low-loaders. The lane extends our German route north.

Pick full truckload (FTL) for a direct sealed run, or LTL groupage to pay only for the space you use. Note that a full trailer crossing the bridges carries the toll regardless of load, so consolidation economics differ from continental lanes.

What determines the price

  1. Destination - Jutland is a straight overland run; Zealand/Copenhagen adds the Storebælt toll.
  2. Bridge tolls - Storebælt, and Øresund for Sweden-bound cargo.
  3. FTL vs LTL, dedicated trailer vs consolidated space.
  4. Nordic onward legs, continuing into Sweden, Norway or Finland.
  5. Vehicle and cargo, reefer for food, GDP for pharma, low-loader for wind components.
  6. Currency, local charges settled in DKK.

For regular Danish and Nordic lanes we set up contract lanes with a fixed rate, reserved vehicles and a dedicated manager.

How we plan a Danish run

A Danish load is planned around the fixed links: the Storebælt toll for Zealand, the Øresund crossing for anything continuing to Sweden, and the specialised handling Danish exports often need - GDP for pharma, temperature control for food, permits for wind components. Cover applies under the CMR Convention with our financial liability in the contract, plus insurance to declared value, position reporting on request, and a personal logistician on the shipment.

FAQ
  • How long does road freight to Denmark take?

From northern Germany, about a day; from Poland or the Netherlands 1–2 days; from the UK around two including the Channel; from Spain three. Reaching Jutland is a direct overland run, while Copenhagen (Zealand) crosses the tolled Storebælt link, which we factor into both time and cost.

  • Do I need customs paperwork for Denmark?

No - Denmark is an EU and Schengen member, so goods in free circulation move there from other EU states without customs formalities. It's outside the eurozone, so it uses the Danish krone, but that affects pricing and local charges, not customs. Non-EU imports we clear as usual.

  • What are the bridge tolls, and are they included?

The Storebælt (Great Belt) link to Zealand and the Øresund Bridge to Sweden both charge substantial HGV tolls. We calculate the tolls for your actual route and include them in the A→B rate, so a Copenhagen or Sweden-bound delivery is fully costed up front.

  • Can you continue from Denmark into Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia?

Yes. Denmark is the road gateway to the Nordics, cargo continues over the Øresund Bridge into Sweden and onward to Norway and Finland. We run these as through-movements on one contract, so a Nordic delivery isn't split across carriers.

  • Can you move wind-turbine components from Denmark?

Yes. Denmark is a wind-energy hub, and turbine sections, blades and nacelles are classic abnormal loads, over-length and over-height, needing permits, escorts and low-loaders. We handle them as oversized transport, planning the route, permits and movement windows around the load.
