Road Freight to Luxembourg: FTL & LTL Across the EU's Smallest Hub

Luxembourg is Europe's smallest sovereign road-freight destination by land area, but it punches far above its size: wedged between Belgium, France and Germany, it's a financial and logistics hub with one of the highest cross-border commuter and freight densities in the EU. Cargo Logistic Solutions runs road freight to and through Luxembourg on its contracted fleet, CMR-insured, with financial liability set in the contract and pricing on the A→B leg only, no empty return mileage in the rate.

As an EU, eurozone and Schengen member sharing borders with three of our other core markets, Luxembourg needs no customs formalities for goods in free circulation, and border stops with Belgium, France and Germany are gone. The planning factors here are narrower than in most countries: no Sunday driving ban of the German or French kind, no CO₂-tiered per-km Maut for the country's own roads, just a short, fast lane with one specific toll rule to know. Tell us the two points and the volume, and a logistician confirms FTL or LTL, a transit window and a rate the same day.

The Eurovignette, not a per-km toll

Unlike Germany's LKW-Maut or Poland's e-TOLL, Luxembourg doesn't run its own distance-based toll system. HGVs over 12 tonnes need a Eurovignette, a time-based charge now shared with just one other country, Sweden, after Denmark left the scheme in January 2025 and the Netherlands followed in July 2026, bought for a day, week, month or year and valid across both territories on the same sticker. Since March 2025 the tariff also factors in CO₂ emission class alongside axle count. Passenger cars and vehicles under 12 t pay nothing at all - Luxembourg's own motorways are toll-free for everyone else. Because Luxembourg is usually one leg of a longer route, we check whether the vehicle already holds a valid Eurovignette from a Swedish leg before quoting a fresh one, it's often already covered.

Bettembourg - Europe's biggest rail motorway

For freight that doesn't need to move by road the whole way, Luxembourg has an unusual asset: the Bettembourg-Dudelange intermodal terminal, home to Europe's largest "rolling motorway" for unaccompanied semi-trailers, running a rail service of over 1,000 km direct to the south of France and northern Spain. For long southbound loads through Luxembourg. We can put the trailer on rail at Bettembourg instead of running the full distance by road, cutting driver hours and emissions on legs that would otherwise mean two or three days of driving. We assess this option case by case against a straight FTL run on cost and timing.

What Luxembourg imports and exports

Luxembourg's real export is financial and business services, but its physical freight profile centres on steel and industrial components - ArcelorMittal, one of the world's largest steel producers, is headquartered and still manufactures here, alongside chemicals, rubber and glass products. Its biggest trading partners by distance are exactly our core lanes: Germany, France and Belgium account for the large majority of goods trade. That shapes our typical loads, steel and industrial components on flatbeds and curtainsiders, palletised retail and e-commerce goods for a wealthy, dense consumer market, and specialised freight tied to the country's satellite and tech sectors. Luxembourg connects our German, Belgian and French lanes into one another rather than acting as an endpoint on its own.

Given the country's small size, most Luxembourg deliveries are the final short leg of a Belgian, French or German run - LTL groupage into Luxembourg City or the southern industrial belt is common and efficient; FTL suits direct steel, industrial or contract-lane deliveries.

What determines the price

  • Route and distance, usually short, since Luxembourg sits inside our Belgian/French/German network.
  • Eurovignette, a flat time-based charge, not distance-based; often already covered by an adjoining leg.
  • Bettembourg rail option, worth pricing against road for long southbound loads.
  • FTL vs LTL, dedicated trailer vs consolidated space.
  • Delivery windows, city-centre and industrial-zone access in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette.
  • Vehicle and cargo, flatbed for steel, curtainsider for retail/industrial goods.

For regular Luxembourg lanes, steel distribution, industrial supply or retail replenishment. We set up contract lanes with a fixed rate, reserved vehicles and a dedicated manager, run from the same team that covers our neighbouring Belgian, French and German routes.

Why our regional coverage matters here

Luxembourg is never an isolated shipment for us, it's the point where our Belgian, French and German lanes meet, so a Luxembourg delivery is planned with real backhaul balance rather than a one-off detour. Cover applies under the CMR Convention with our financial liability in the contract, plus insurance to declared value, position reporting on request, and a personal logistician on the shipment.

FAQ
  • How long does road freight to Luxembourg take?

From Belgium or western Germany, typically same-day given the short distances; from France around a day; from the Netherlands 1–2 days; from Poland around two days; from Spain 2–3. Luxembourg's position between three of our core markets makes it one of our fastest European lanes.

  • Do I need a toll for Luxembourg?

Only for HGVs over 12 tonnes, via the Eurovignette, a time-based charge (not per-km like Germany's Maut) now valid across just Luxembourg and Sweden on one sticker, since Denmark left the scheme in 2025 and the Netherlands followed in 2026. Vehicles under 12 t and all passenger cars pay nothing on Luxembourg's motorways. We check whether the vehicle's Eurovignette from a Swedish leg already covers the Luxembourg run before quoting a new one.

  • Do I need customs paperwork for Luxembourg?

No - Luxembourg is an EU, eurozone and Schengen member, so goods in free circulation move there from Belgium, France, Germany or any other EU state without customs formalities.

  • Can you use rail instead of road for long-distance Luxembourg freight?

Yes, for suitable loads. The Bettembourg-Dudelange terminal runs Europe's largest rail motorway for unaccompanied semi-trailers, over 1,000 km direct to southern France and northern Spain. For long southbound legs through Luxembourg we can compare this rail option against a straight road run on cost and transit time.

  • What do you typically move to and from Luxembourg?

Steel and industrial components - ArcelorMittal is headquartered here, plus chemicals, glass products and palletised retail and e-commerce goods for a small but high-income consumer market. Most Luxembourg freight connects directly into our German, French and Belgian lanes rather than standing alone.
