Road Freight to Spain

Freight to Spain: regular lane? Lock a rate. Transit to Spain runs 3–4 days via the Irún-Bordeaux corridor. Reefer capacity is the constraint in the fruit and vegetable season. We book it in advance rather than searching for a truck on the day of loading. CMR cover applies to the whole load, and our forwarder policy adds PLN 500,000 on top. We invoice the loaded leg only. Give us the route, weight and dates, and the format and rate come back the same working day.

Road Freight to Spain: FTL, LTL and Refrigerated Transport

Cargo Logistic Solutions runs road freight to and from Spain with our own office on the ground there, alongside our teams in Poland, Germany and the UK. That's different from most of our other country pages: a shipment to Spain isn't handled from a distance, it's coordinated by people who work the route locally, know the AP-7 bottlenecks, and can react same-day if something needs adjusting on the Spanish end. We quote the route, insure the cargo, and give you a personal logistics manager for the whole journey. You pay for the A→B leg only.

What do we ship to and from Spain?

Spain is Europe's second-largest vehicle producer, and that shows up directly in the freight mix: components and finished vehicles moving to and from plants like SEAT's Martorell complex near Barcelona, Ford's Almussafes plant near Valencia, and Stellantis and Renault sites scattered across the north. That's steady, predictable FTL freight on a tarpaulin truck. The other big flow is agricultural - Murcia alone accounts for around a fifth of Spain's fruit and vegetable exports, and produce moving north to Poland, Germany and the UK needs a refrigerated truck with the cold chain checked before loading, not just a standard trailer.

How long does road freight to Spain take?

Distance from origin does more to set the schedule than anything happening inside Spain itself.

Route

Distance (approx.)

Typical transit

London → Madrid

~1,720 km (Channel crossing)

2–3 days

Berlin → Madrid

~2,320 km

3–4 days

Warsaw → Madrid

~2,900 km

4–5 days

These figures assume standard EU driving-time rules (up to 9–10 hours' driving, 45 hours' weekly rest). Every one of these routes funnels through the same chokepoint: the La Jonquera-Le Perthus crossing on the France-Spain border, where the AP-7/A9 corridor carries roughly a third of its total traffic as trucks. There's no practical alternative crossing for this corridor, so congestion there, heaviest in summer and around holidays, is worth building into any delivery estimate rather than treating as a surprise.

Which vehicle fits your shipment to Spain?

  • Tarpaulin truck (curtainsider) - the default for a full FTL load of automotive components, machinery or palletised goods, up to 92 m³ and 24 t.
  • Refrigerated trucking - for produce, wine and anything on a temperature-controlled run, especially out of Murcia and Almería.
  • LTL / groupage - for smaller consignments consolidated with other Spain-bound freight, which keeps the cost per pallet down.

Do you need customs clearance for shipments to Spain?

No - Spain is an EU member state, so freight between Poland, Germany, Spain and any other EU country moves under free circulation: no customs declaration, no border stop, just a CMR consignment note. Freight from the UK is the exception: it needs an export customs clearance, an EORI number and usually a T1 transit document, since Brexit took the UK out of the EU customs union. We prepare that paperwork before the truck leaves so it clears without delay.

What affects the price of road freight to Spain?

  • Distance and origin, a London-Madrid run costs a fraction of a Warsaw-Madrid one.
  • Vehicle type, reefer rates sit above a standard tarpaulin truck.
  • Load size, full truckload (ldm/m³/t) versus a groupage rate per pallet.
  • Border timing, routing through La Jonquera outside peak summer weekends and holiday periods avoids the worst of the queue.
  • Cargo type, temperature-controlled produce carries a handling surcharge for cold-chain equipment and monitoring.
  • Tolls en route - French péage sections and the tolled AP-7 in Spain (with the toll-free A-7 as a slower alternative) both add to the base rate.
  • Seasonality, the Murcia and Almería harvest season tightens capacity on the Spain-Central Europe lane.

Regular shipments to Spain?

If you're running the same lane every week, automotive components into Martorell, produce out of Murcia, a contract rate is worth setting up: a fixed price, a guaranteed truck, and a manager on our Spanish team who already knows your route.

FAQ
  • How long does a truck take from Poland to Spain?

A Warsaw-Madrid run covers around 2,900 km and typically takes 4–5 days under standard EU driving-time limits.

  • Do I need an EORI number to ship from the UK to Spain?

Yes. Any commercial shipment from the UK into the EU needs an EORI number, an export declaration and, in most cases, a T1 transit document.

  • Which border crossing do you use for Spain?

La Jonquera-Le Perthus on the AP-7/A9 corridor, the main Mediterranean route between France and Spain and, in practice, the only realistic crossing for most Central European freight.

  • Can you ship refrigerated produce from Spain?

Yes, our refrigerated trucks handle produce out of Murcia and Almería, with the cold chain checked before loading and monitored through the trip.

  • Do you have a local team in Spain?

Yes - Spain is one of our own offices, alongside Poland, Germany and the UK, so shipments there are coordinated locally rather than managed remotely.
