Road Freight to Sweden

Freight to Sweden: regular lane? Lock a rate. Transit runs through the Øresund crossing or by ferry from Świnoujście. We choose the route by cost and your delivery window, not by habit. Ferry booking is confirmed before the truck is dispatched. Insurance is CMR, backed by our PLN 500,000 forwarder policy. The rate covers A→B and nothing else, so no empty return sits in the invoice. Tell us the route and what you are moving; the format and the rate come back the same working day.

Road Freight to Sweden: FTL, LTL and Ferry-Routed Transport

Cargo Logistic Solutions runs road freight to and from Sweden out of our offices in Poland, Germany, Spain and the UK. Sweden is the one country on our list with no land border to the rest of continental Europe, so every shipment either crosses by ferry or loops through Denmark over the Öresund Bridge, there's no way around planning for it. We quote the route including the sea leg, insure the cargo end to end, and give you a personal logistics manager who tracks the truck from loading to delivery. You pay for the A→B leg only.

What do we ship to and from Sweden?

Sweden's freight mix is built on two heavyweight industries. Automotive and industrial component freight moves in and out of Volvo's Gothenburg operations and Scania's Södertälje plant, steady industrial equipment and machinery cargo on a standard FTL trailer. The other major flow is forestry: Sweden is one of the world's largest exporters of pulp, paper and sawnwood, with around 90% of production shipped out, much of it through the Port of Gothenburg, Scandinavia's largest container and logistics hub. Heavy industrial equipment and machinery bound for the north also often needs a low-loader rather than a standard trailer.

How does road freight actually get to Sweden?

There's no bridge or tunnel connecting Sweden to the rest of mainland Europe, so every route uses one of two options:

  • Direct ferry - Świnoujšcie (Poland) to Trelleborg, or Rostock/Travemünde (Germany) to Trelleborg, a 6–10 hour crossing that skips well over a thousand kilometres of driving.
  • Land route via Denmark, drive through Germany and Denmark, cross the short Puttgarden-Rødby ferry (about 45 minutes), then continue over the Öresund Bridge into Malmö.

Which one we use depends on the origin and how much driver rest time the ferry crossing can double as.

Which vehicle fits your shipment to Sweden?

  • Tarpaulin truck (curtainsider) - the standard choice for a full FTL load of components, machinery or palletised goods, up to 92 m³ and 24 t.
  • Low loader - for heavy machinery and special vehicles, especially industrial equipment moving to or from plants in the north.
  • LTL / groupage - for smaller consignments consolidated with other Sweden-bound freight, which keeps the ferry cost per pallet down.

One thing worth knowing if your Swedish leg continues inland: Sweden allows much heavier combinations than the EU standard, up to 74 tonnes and 34.5 metres on its BK4 road network, roughly double the usual 40-tonne EU limit. Our contracted fleet runs standard EU-spec trailers, but for onward domestic legs we can bring in a local Swedish haulier running BK4-rated equipment where that's the more efficient option.

Do you need customs clearance for shipments to Sweden?

No - Sweden is an EU member state, so freight from Poland, Germany, Spain or any other EU country moves under free circulation: no customs declaration, just a CMR consignment note (and the ferry booking). Freight from the UK still needs an export customs clearance, an EORI number and usually a T1 transit document, since Brexit took the UK out of the EU customs union.

What affects the price of road freight to Sweden?

  • Route choice, a direct ferry crossing versus the longer land route via Denmark changes both cost and transit time.
  • Distance and origin, a Berlin-Stockholm run costs a fraction of a Madrid-Stockholm one.
  • Vehicle type, a low-loader for heavy machinery costs more than a standard tarpaulin rate.
  • Load size, full truckload (ldm/m³/t) versus a groupage rate per pallet.
  • Congestion charges - Stockholm and Gothenburg both levy a congestion tax on vehicles entering the city centre, which we factor into last-mile deliveries.
  • Ferry capacity, sailings fill up around holidays and peak forestry-export season, so booking early avoids a rate premium.

Regular shipments to Sweden?

If you're shipping the same lane every week, components into Gothenburg, forestry products out, a contract rate is worth setting up: a fixed price, a guaranteed ferry slot, and a manager who already knows whether the ferry or the Öresund route suits your schedule better.

Request a route quote and we'll come back with pricing and the next available slot the same day.

FAQ
  • How does a truck from Poland get to Sweden?

Either by direct ferry from Świnoujście to Trelleborg, or by driving through Germany and Denmark and crossing the Öresund Bridge into Malmö, there's no land border, so one of these two routes is always needed.

  • How long does the ferry to Sweden take?

The Świnoujście-Trelleborg and Rostock-Trelleborg crossings both run in the 6–10 hour range depending on the operator and route.

  • Do I need an EORI number to ship from the UK to Sweden?

Yes. Any commercial shipment from the UK into the EU needs an EORI number, an export declaration and, in most cases, a T1 transit document.

  • Can Swedish roads take heavier trucks than the rest of the EU?

Yes - Sweden's BK4 road network allows combinations up to 74 tonnes and 34.5 metres, well above the standard 40-tonne EU limit, though this applies to Swedish-registered domestic equipment rather than standard international trailers.

  • Is there a congestion charge for trucks entering Swedish cities?

Yes, both Stockholm and Gothenburg charge a congestion tax for vehicles entering the city centre, which applies to most commercial trucks.
