Temperature-Controlled Freight - Validated Cold Chain Transport

Cold chain transport fails silently - the trailer looks fine, the seal is intact, and the temperature excursion that ruined the cargo happened somewhere in the middle of the journey with no one watching. Cargo Logistic Solutions runs temperature-controlled freight across Europe with continuous monitoring built into every reefer movement, not checked only at loading and unloading.

What This Page Covers

This is the equipment and monitoring side of cold chain transport - the reefer mechanics that apply regardless of what's inside the trailer. If you're specifically shipping food or perishables, the industry-specific rules (HACCP, allergen handling) are covered on our Food & Perishables page. If you're shipping medicines or healthcare products, GDP compliance is covered on our Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare page. Here, we cover the reefer equipment, temperature ranges, and monitoring technology that both of those industries - and others - depend on.

We run refrigerated semi-trailers (13.6 m, 88 m³, up to 22 t, from €1.55/km) with continuous temperature logging as standard, not an optional upgrade.

How Temperature-Controlled Transport Actually Works

  • Pre-cooling before loading. A reefer trailer needs to reach the target temperature before cargo is loaded - loading into a warm trailer and expecting the unit to catch up afterward is a common cause of early-transit excursions.
  • Single-temp vs multi-compartment trailers. Some shipments need one consistent temperature throughout; others - mixed loads with different products - need a multi-compartment trailer capable of maintaining separate zones.
  • Continuous monitoring, not spot checks. Digital temperature loggers record readings throughout transit, creating a verifiable record rather than relying on a single check at departure and arrival.
  • Insulation and defrost cycles matter. Trailer insulation rating affects how well temperature holds during door-opening at multi-drop deliveries, and defrost cycles on the reefer unit can cause brief temperature fluctuations that need to be distinguished from genuine equipment failure.
  • Refrigerant regulation is changing the fleet. Under the EU's F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, servicing refrigeration equipment with virgin high-GWP refrigerant (such as R404A, common in older transport refrigeration units) has been restricted since 2025 - fleets are transitioning to lower-GWP refrigerants, which affects both equipment costs and long-term availability of older units.

Temperature Ranges by Category

Category

Typical range

Frozen food, some biologics

Chilled

+2°C to +8°C

Fresh produce, dairy, most vaccines

Cool/controlled ambient

+10°C to +25°C

Chocolate, cosmetics, some pharmaceuticals

Ambient (dry)

No active control needed

Non-perishable dry goods

What Affects Temperature-Controlled Transport Cost

  • Temperature range - frozen transport typically costs more than chilled or controlled ambient due to equipment demands.
  • Single vs multi-compartment trailer - mixed-temperature loads requiring compartmentalisation cost more than a single consistent zone.
  • Monitoring and documentation level - continuous digital logging with exportable records may cost more than basic temperature checks, depending on what your buyer or regulator requires.
  • Distance and multi-drop delivery - each door opening on a multi-drop route affects temperature recovery time and reefer unit workload.
  • Pre-cooling time - trailers requiring significant pre-cooling before loading add time to the overall schedule.
  • Fleet refrigerant type - as F-Gas restrictions tighten, transport using older high-GWP refrigerant equipment may see cost pressure compared to newer low-GWP fleet.

Why Choose Cargo Logistic Solutions for Temperature-Controlled Freight

We run continuous digital temperature monitoring as standard, with pre-cooling and defrost cycle awareness built into how we plan each route - not discovered as a problem mid-transit. Every shipment is insured, and our dedicated logistics contact can tell you the temperature history of your cargo at any point in the journey. With offices in Poland, Spain, Germany and the UK, we run cold chain routes across the corridors our clients depend on for both food and pharmaceutical cargo. Temperature-controlled freight is one of the core shipment types we run alongside FTL, LTL, and oversized cargo formats.

Need validated cold chain transport? Get a quote - we'll confirm trailer type, monitoring level, and temperature range before your shipment is booked.

FAQ
  • Do you provide continuous temperature monitoring, or just checks at delivery?

Continuous digital monitoring is standard on our temperature-controlled shipments, creating a verifiable record throughout transit rather than a single check at arrival.

  • Can one trailer carry cargo needing two different temperatures?

Yes, with a multi-compartment reefer trailer capable of maintaining separate temperature zones, a single-temp trailer can't do this.

  • Why does pre-cooling matter before loading?

Loading cargo into a trailer that hasn't reached the target temperature risks an early-transit excursion before the reefer unit catches up. We pre-cool before loading as standard.

  • Is the EU's F-Gas Regulation affecting reefer transport?

Yes, since 2025, servicing older refrigeration equipment with high-GWP refrigerant like R404A has been restricted, which is gradually shifting the industry toward newer, lower-GWP reefer units.

  • What's the difference between this page and your Food & Perishables page?

This page covers the reefer equipment and monitoring mechanics that apply across industries. Food & Perishables covers food-specific rules like HACCP and allergen handling.
